Why Biologicals Often Disappoint Outside the Laboratory

Agricultural biology rarely fails because the underlying science is uninteresting. It fails because farming is not a laboratory. A microorganism that performs well under controlled conditions still has to survive manufacturing, storage, transport, application, temperature variation and competition from the existing soil ecosystem. Only then does it have the opportunity to establish around a plant root and influence performance. That is an unusually demanding journey.

It also explains why strong laboratory results do not automatically translate into consistent commercial outcomes. In agriculture, the delivery system is not a supporting detail. It is part of the technology itself.

We designed DuraTerra around that reality. The objective was not simply to identify beneficial microorganisms. It was to create a practical way of carrying them into the paddock, protecting them through application and placing them where they have the best chance of contributing to plant growth.

That distinction matters to farmers and investors alike. Farmers need products that perform under real conditions, not only in ideal ones. Investors need technologies whose value is protected by more than a promising biological ingredient. The commercial challenge in agricultural biologicals is therefore not discovery alone. It is discovery, formulation, delivery and repeatability working as one system.

Agriculture has no shortage of clever technology. What it often lacks is technology that fits easily into the way farms already operate. A product may be scientifically impressive, but every additional piece of equipment, training requirement, storage condition or application step creates friction. That friction matters. Farms are complex operating businesses, and even a small change has to justify the time, cost and risk involved.

We treated ease of adoption as a design requirement from the beginning. DuraTerra BioM is being developed as a granule that can be applied using conventional fertiliser spreaders. It is intended to work within established farm routines rather than asking farmers to build a new operating system around the product.

That may sound like a modest point, but it is central to commercial scalability. The best agricultural technologies do not force a choice between innovation and practicality. They make the innovation feel familiar. For a farmer, the ideal experience is straightforward: a product arrives in a usable form, fits existing equipment, is applied at a commercial rate and produces a result that can be measured in the paddock and in the farm accounts.

Technology adoption is often described as a question of farmer education. Sometimes it is really a question of better product design.

Evidence

Every founder believes in their technology. Investors and farmers are right to ask for more. Agriculture is full of variables: rainfall, temperature, soil type, pasture species, management practices and seasonal conditions. A result observed once may be interesting, but it is not yet a commercial proposition. That is why validation matters so much in this sector.

For DuraTerra, independent field trials are not a final box to tick after the product has been developed. They are part of the development process itself. Replicated trials help determine where the technology performs, how consistently it performs and under which conditions the value proposition is strongest.

Good evidence does more than support a marketing claim. It guides formulation, application rates, market selection and commercial strategy. It tells us where to focus, what to improve and what not to claim. That discipline may make the development journey slower than simply launching a product and telling a compelling story. But in agriculture, credibility compounds. The stronger the evidence base, the more durable the business that can be built on top of it.

Economics

The Economics of One More Tonne of Homegrown Feed

The value of pasture is easy to underestimate because it does not arrive with an invoice. Purchased feed does. For a livestock business, every additional tonne of quality feed grown on-farm can potentially replace a portion of feed that would otherwise need to be bought, transported and handled. That makes pasture productivity more than an agronomic metric. It is a direct driver of operating margin.

This is why the commercial case for soil biology should not begin with microbes. It should begin with farm economics. A biological technology creates value only if it improves an outcome that matters: more usable pasture, stronger nutrient efficiency, greater resilience or a more reliable production system. The farmer does not get paid for biological activity in isolation. The farmer gets paid for production from an economically efficient feed base.

For investors, this is also the important point. The market opportunity is not defined by how interesting the science is. It is defined by the size and urgency of the economic problem the science can solve.

Why We Started DuraTerra

DuraTerra began with a question rather than a product. Why are farmers applying sophisticated combinations of nutrients, genetics and management, yet still struggling to unlock the full productive potential of their soils?

The more we examined that question, the more one gap stood out. Agriculture has become extraordinarily good at managing what is added above and into the soil. It has paid comparatively less attention to the living system that determines how effectively many of those inputs are converted into plant growth. That did not mean agriculture needed another biological product placed beside the existing fertiliser programme. It meant biology had to become easier to deliver, easier to apply and easier to evaluate commercially.

That insight led to DuraTerra BioM: a precision-coated organic granule designed to carry beneficial microorganisms through existing farm application systems and into the root zone. We are now focused on the work that turns an idea into a company: independent validation, formulation refinement, repeatable manufacturing and a clear route to market.

The ambition is significant, but the principle remains simple. Agriculture may not need more inputs. It may need better ways to make its existing system work. That is the company we are building.
